Will HP’s TouchPad be resurrected?

When Hewlett-Packard announced recently it was killing its nascent tablet, the TouchPad, few expected the mobile unit to rise from the dead Lazarus style. But it seems that could be the case.

Don’t expect it to happen quickly.

HP decided to abandon the PC market (in favor of business systems and such) and shed itself of the trouble of making desktops, laptops and mobile devices.

But it seems they’ll be kicking that division of their company to the curb in the convoluted, chaotic and awkward way most big companies have of doing, well, anything.

The new word is that HP will spin off their “Personal Systems Group” (PSG) as  a separate company. Of course, that can’t happen until the HP board meets, studies its collective navels and stock portfolios to see how profitable the move might be to each other.

In the meantime, HP suppliers, employees, talent and expertise in the arena will sit in limbo — or head for the hills, if they’re smart.

If PSG does in fact become a separate company — complete with an IPO and line of products — it’s likely the TouchPad would be among the lineup.

The tablet, which got good reviews from users and tech pros, may yet live again. But what kind of life will it be, shackled in any way to the disorganized, less-than-agile HP? And will there be anybody left by mid-winter to run it?
